October 2020 Book Releases
Welcome to pumpkin season and my post on October 2020 book releases! I don’t know about you, but I am very ready for Autumn to take hold. The crispy leaves, mugs of hot chocolate and spooky reads galore. Although I have plans to read some older books, there are some great new releases to check out this month. Here are my top picks of October 2020 book releases:

The Beast and the Bethany is an amazing and darkly humorous middle grade novel. The story centres around Ebenezer Tweezer, a selfish 511 year old, who feeds the beast in his attic whatever it desires in exchange for magical gifts. When only a juicy child will do Ebenezer adopts an child from the local orphanage… but Bethany is not your average orphan! I was lucky enough to be a gifted an advanced readers copy of this book and absolutely loved it. You can check out my full review here and I highly recommend that you check this book out.
The Once and Future Witches
Title: The Once and Future Witches

What would October be without some witchy goodness?! I am really happy that I am receiving this book in a book box. The story is set in 1893 when witches are nothing but a distant memory. The burnings made sure of that. Instead, women must find power at the ballot box and the three Eastwood sisters intend to do just that. Suffragettes and sisterhood go hand in hand so the women’s movement may well become the witch’s movement. Hunted, the sisters must remember old magics and make new alliances in order to survive.
The Puppetmaster’s Apprentice
Title: The Puppetmaster’s Apprentice
Author: Lisa DeSelm
Publisher: Page Street Kids
Published: 13th October 2020
Genre: Fairy tale retelling, YA fantasy

There was a question recently asked on Twitter regarding which fairy tale people would like to see a retelling of. I answered Pinocchio as it is such a rare story to find a contemporary retelling of. This book is described as “Pinocchio meets Frankenstein in this dark fairy tale retelling where a young girl is commissioned to build an assassin for a dark-hearted tyrant.” Pretty unusual and epic huh? I encourage you to read the full synopsis as this sounds like a really great book and I am shocked that I haven’t heard more about it!
Kingdom of the Wicked
Title: Kingdom of the Wicked
Author: Kerri Maniscalco
Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
Published: 27th October 2020
Genre: Historical fiction, YA fantasy

I am sure that this is going to be a very popular book to pick up this month! Witches hide to avoid persecution but being on a vengeance mission tends to get you noticed. Especially when you plan to use forbidden dark magic. When Emilia find the body of her twin she does not care what the cost is for vengeance. Her fate collides with Wrath, a troubled demon, who is investigating a series of women’s murders. This disturbing mystery is about to take a bewitching turn….
Magic Lessons

Genre: Historical fiction, fantasy

I loved the film Practical Magic when it first came out and have since picked up the original book and sequel. This is a prequel to the story, which explores the matriarch of the Owens line and how the family curse came to be. If you haven’t read or watched Practical Magic, then add it to your October lists because it is the dark, witchy goodness that you need this month. You can find the original book here* and film here* if you want to find out more.
