Audible Sale 2 for 1- Six for Sunday
I do love an Audible 2 for 1 sale as you just can’t beat that kind of value! You do have to be a member to be able to access the sale but it is easy enough to subscribe for a credit, buy your books and then cancel. They may try to tempt you with offers such as a free credit etc… Yes, I know, I get hooked very easily. You have your credit, so what do you spend it on?! Choices, choices! Here are my top picks to help you choose.
Audible Sale Selection
Big Little Lies
Author: Liane Mortiarty
Narrated by: Caroline Lee
Length: 15 hrs 55
Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd
It is only very recently that I watched the first season of the TV show after hearing how great it is for ages. I really enjoyed it and timed it well as season two has just started, having taken over the Game of Thrones TV slot. Big Little Lies is a thriller/murder mystery based in a beautiful little town where school-yard scandal takes over. The narration is clear and seems, from at least the audio clip, to be well paced. This was my first purchase from the sale and I am looking forward to listening.
Trigger warnings – domestic & sexual abuse.
Storm Front
Author: Jim Butcher
Narrated by: James Marsters
Length: 8 hrs 1
Publisher: Buzzy Multimedia Publishing Corp.
This is the first book in The Dresden Files series, an urban fantasy series based in Chicago starring Harry Dresden, the only wizard-detective in the yellow pages. The first two books have a heavy pulp noir influence but the series then changes in to more traditional urban fantasy. Turn Coat and Changes are some of my favourite books of all time. I love this series so much. Also, I love that the series is narrated by James Marsters (better known as Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer), who is an amazing narrator.
Harry is contacted by Chicago PD’s Special Investigation Unit after a particularly brutal murder takes place and it looks like supernatural forces are to blame. Juggling his work for the PD and a new client, Harry has to explore Chicago’s underbelly, full of mobsters, vampires and other dangerous individuals to try to crack the case.
Six of Crows
Author: Leigh Bardugo
Narrated by: Jay Snyder, Brandon Rubin, Fred Berman, Lauren Fortgang, Roger Clark, Elizabeth Evas, Tristan Morris
Length: 15 hrs 4
Publisher: Audible Studios
I picked this up during the last Audible 2 for 1 sale. Six of Crows is the first in Leigh Bardugo’s extremely popular YA fantasy duology. Taking a trip to Ketterdam we meet the criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. With heists, spies, thieves and heartrenders the book promises to be action packed and full of interesting characters. I really must listen to it soon (blame my Harry Potter re-run).
The Bell Jar
Author: Sylvia Plath
Narrated by: Maggie Gyllenhaal
Length: 7 hrs 24
Publisher: Faber & Faber
If you have read The Paper & Hearts Society by Lucy Powrie already then you may well have added this book to your list already. If not, you should! The Bell Jar is a classic and this version is narrated by the well-known actress Maggie Gyllenhaal. It is a semiautobiographical novel, which offers a hard, honest and intimate look into mental illness. Set in 1953, Esther Greenwood wins an internship at NY Fashion Magazine. Her dream quickly spirals into a nightmare as she struggles with difficult relationships and a misogynistic society.
Trigger warnings – depression, suicide.
Milkman
Author: Anna Burns
Narrated by: Brid Brennan
Length: 14 hrs 11
Publisher: FAber & Faber
Milkman is Anna Burn’s Man Booker Prize winning novel, which explores the troubles of Northern Ireland in the 70s-80s from the perspective of an 18 year-old girl. This will be a more challenging read/listen than any of my other picks, as you would expect from a Man Booker Prize winning piece of literary fiction. However, the narration is meant to be excellent and Brid Brennan’s Northern Irish accent is marvellous to listen to. I would recommend that anyone who looks for trigger warnings to check reader reviews carefully as the novel touches on many difficult subjects.
If this book appeals to you then I also recommend you check out The God of Small Things, which is a previous Man Booker Prize winner. It is beautifully written and one of my favourite books. The audiobook is narrated by one of my favourite narrators, Aysha Kala, who has also narrated books by Alice Osman and Sabaa Tahir amongst others. (Again, please check for trigger warnings prior to listening with this one).
The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared
Author: Jonas Jonasson
Narrated by: Peter Kenny
Length: 10 hrs 59
Publisher: Strathmore Publishing
This is a humorous piece of contemporary fiction, which I bought on audiobook a long time ago. It is the perfect book to listen to when you are multi-tasking as the narration is clear, very easy to listen to and is nice to listen to a chapter at a time. The story opens with Allan deciding he isn’t interested in his big 100th birthday celebration at the nursing home so, as the title suggests, he climbs out the window and escapes. There are flashbacks from Allan’s current adventure to other parts of his larger-than-life backstory.
Audible Sale Selection
I think that there is definitely a reasonable selection in the latest Audible 2 for 1 sale, which runs until June 23rd. Personally, I would have liked to have seen a few more options in the YA and Fantasy selections. However, there are plenty of titles to spend your accumulating credits on. Recently I have been re-listening to the Harry Potter series, which is my go-to when I am tired as it is so familiar. I really am looking forward to listening to something new though so hit me up with your recommendations! Are there any books in the Audible Sale that have caught your eye? What are you listening to at the moment?
